Apprenticeship training application

If you want to become an apprentice and:

  • have a sponsor or employer who has agreed to provide you with apprenticeship training in a specific trade, and
  • you are at least 18 years old

you can use this website to submit your online apprenticeship training application and start the apprenticeship registration process.

Applying for Registration as an Apprentice

Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job and in-school training that takes between 2-5 years to complete, depending on the trade.

To apply, you must have a sponsor (usually your employer) who has agreed to provide you with apprenticeship training. If you do not have a sponsor and want to learn more about apprenticeship training or get help finding a sponsor, please visit ontario.ca/apprenticeship, or contact your local Ontario apprenticeship office. If you have previously applied for this trade, you can change your sponsor.

Once you have a sponsor, there are three steps in the apprenticeship registration process:

Step One:
Complete an apprenticeship training application and submit it to an Employment Ontario apprenticeship office. You can do this online through this submission form or by downloading and filling out a paper application.

Step Two:
Wait for someone from the Employment Ontario apprenticeship office to contact you and your sponsor about signing and registering a Training Agreement.

Step Three:
Once your training agreement is registered with the province, apply for membership to the Ontario College of Trades. Visit Ontario College of Trades for more information.

How to submit your apprenticeship application

You can submit your apprenticeship training application online, and complete Step One of the apprenticeship registration process right here. It takes about 10 minutes to complete the application.

Please note: you cannot save your application and complete or edit it later. You must complete and submit it in one session.

To make sure you can complete the application in one session, please have the following information about you and your sponsor or employer with you before you start:

  • Social Insurance Number
  • Mailing address, including your postal code
  • Your telephone number(s) and email address
  • Full legal name of your sponsor or employer
  • Mailing address for your sponsor, including postal code

  • Number of regular working or training hours per week
  • Employer/Sponsor ID number* (if your sponsor has ever registered an apprentice, he or she will have an ID # issued by the Training, Colleges and Universities)
  • Proof of Age, SIN and Education/Training

*Although you do not have to provide your sponsor’s ID number in order to submit the application, including it helps us find the right sponsor in our database, which will speed up the application process. Your sponsor can call any Employment Ontario office that delivers apprenticeship services and easily get this number if he or she does not already have it.
